All-O-Matic Buy American Act Compliance

Buy American Act

Brief History of the Buy American Act

Originating in the late 1760s, American colonists started a “non-consumption movement” to rebel against the British government. Enacted in 1933, the Buy American Act was established to restrict federal agencies from purchasing items produced or manufactured in the United States, limit purchasing “foreign” products, and bring America out of the Great Depression. In the 1980s, a provision of The Surface Transportation Assistance Act was introduced and would apply to industries that dealt with vehicles, including gate operators.

Buy American Act Requirements

The Buy American Act requires federal agencies to produce domestic materials and products. In short, federal agencies that are Buy American Act compliant must abide by two conditions. The first condition requires the procurement for public use in the United States. The second condition requires that items to be procured, or materials from which they are manufactured, must be present in the United States in sufficient and reasonably available commercial quantities of satisfactory quality.
